What is CISMA?
The Cardiff Interactive Shoulder Movement Alliance (CISMA) is a web-based platform for professionals who are interested in shoulder movement and/or who deal with people who have shoulder problems.
A web-based platform has been purposely selected because it means that you can access material and participate when it is convenient for you. There is no membership fee or travel involved, so aside from your time there is no cost to you.
What is the aim of CISMA?
CISMA provides an opportunity for professionals to collaborate on projects concerned with shoulder movement and shoulder problems. The central ethos is that this process should be inclusive and democratic – giving an opportunity for professionals to participate and contribute, irrespective of their geographical location or affiliation.
In parallel to this, the aim is that the resources that CISMA generates should be available to the clinical, educational and research communities.
Who are CISMA?
The CISMA initiative is operated by the Department of Physiotherapy at Cardiff University, UK along with input from shoulder clinicians in the South Wales region. However it is the involvement of shoulder professionals such as you that is the key ingredient in CISMA.
What project is CISMA currently undertaking?
The CISMA Scapulothoracic Assessment System (SAS) is the flagship project that is currently underway. The aim of this project is to establish a standardised clinical approach for describing and recording scapulothoracic position and movement patterns.
How does this project align with the CISMA aims?
Through the CISMA website, shoulder clinicians and academics have been invited to give their opinions on the terminology that they use to describe scapulothoracic position and movement patterns. The responses that they provided have determined the scapulothoracic descriptors to be used.
Clinicians and academics can now access the assessment system via the CISMA website and can see how it is applied to clinical videos of scapulothoracic position and movement patterns. Clinician and academic opinion on the usability of the tool will be gathered through the website, ensuring that the resulting system is developed in both an inclusive and user-informed manner.
Is that the only project that CISMA will undertake?
No. It is hoped that members of the shoulder community will collaborate on identifying and participating in future shoulder research projects.
Why should I participate?
If you are a clinician or academic who is interested in shoulder movement and/or deal with people who have shoulder problems then this is an opportunity for you to contribute to developments in your field. Participating in the CISMA initiative also gives you a no-cost, convenient opportunity to participate in current research – ideal for evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and a valuable addition to your CV.
In addition you will have access to the CISMA SAS, the on-line training suite and the soon-to-be launched "Database of published evidence relating to each movement component" to further support evidence based practice in this area.
